BUSINESS AND WORKFORCE PREPARATION- THE “HEALTH” PARTNERSHIP

Health Career Camps Picture

The Northwest Workforce Development Council and the Northwest Alliance for Health Care Skills, in partnership with local school districts and Community and Technical colleges, are providing seven Summer Health Career Camps for middle and high school students.

In a series of week-long career camps held throughout the Whatcom, Skagit and Island Counties, students observe operations, participate in mock emergencies, practice CPR, and wear scrubs as they find out what it takes to work in health care.  They also attend lectures, visit labs, hospitals, and various emergency medical services, learn about financial aid packages, and how to plan the remainder of their high school career most effectively

“It’s an opportunity for them to explore jobs in health care, and find out first-hand what additional classes they need in high school to make the most of their postsecondary education,” says Sanjay Rughani, Program Manager for Northwest Workforce Development Council.

Each of these career camps have been organized by the Northwest Workforce Development Council working closely with business, education and labor, to develop the camp concept as one means of addressing the state’s health care personnel shortage.  These activities continue health career information presentations made to 2,604 middle and high school students during the 2004-2005 school year. Nine summer health career camps are in session with 128 students attending. 18 are continuing on with internships with 5 being certified to work as Certified Nursing Assistants
